[Objective/Significance] The mechanism through which interdisciplinary knowledge production translates into broad social impact remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to dissect how the interdisciplinary features of a paper affect its social impact and to examine the moderating role of author characteristics, thereby revealing the generating mechanisms of interdisciplinary social impact. [Methods/Processes] Integrating variables at both the paper and author levels, this study analyzes a sample of publications from the field of psychology (2011—2015) using hierarchical linear modeling. At the paper level, interdisciplinarity is measured by the variety, disparity, and balance of referenced disciplines. At the author level, academic impact and productivity traits are included. Social impact is gauged via multidimensional Altmetrics indicators covering news, policy, and social media attention, among others. [Limitations] The conclusions are drawn from a specific discipline and a cohort of high-impact authors within a defined period. Their generalizability requires further validation across diverse disciplines and broader author samples. [Results/Conclusions] The findings indicate that the variety of disciplines in a paper’s references significantly enhances all measured dimensions of its social impact, while disparity and balance inhibit certain metrics like policy citations. Notably, an author’s high-impact status significantly amplifies the positive effect of variety on social impact, although this moderating effect diminishes as the expertise level of the audience increases. This research provides an empirical basis for optimizing the design and evaluation of interdisciplinary research.
